Spiral Pine Red
cochineal dyed pine needles, cotton yarn
42 x 47 inches
Spiral Pine Red weaves star motifs to disrupt the clarity of cosmic imagery, intentionally creating “glitches” in a woven interpretation of the Milky Way’s spiral arm, as seen through the Hubble telescope. The star motif, symbolizing omnidirectional expansion, acts as an anti-compass—breaking down traditional mapping and cartographic conventions. Each star interlocks with the next, forming a spiraling, fractal-like maze that gestures toward a cosmos without borders or fixed perspectives.
This piece challenges the Western gaze, imagining a universe beyond imposed frameworks. Made from foraged pine needles, hand-dyed with cochineal, the work is deeply rooted in natural, grounding materials. Through this synthesis of digital distortion and ancestral craft, Spiral Pine Red reimagines how we see and navigate the celestial unknown.
