Spiral Pine Red
cochineal dyed pine needles, cotton yarn
42 x 47 inches

"Spiral Arm Red" employs star weaving pattern motifs to disrupt the usual clarity of cosmic imagery, creating intentional "glitches" in the woven image of a Hubble telescope's view of the Milky Way’s spiral arm. This star motif, symbolizing omnidirectional expansion from a central point, becomes an anti-compass, breaking down traditional mapping and cartographic interpretations. Each star interlocks with the next, forming an expansive spiral that mirrors a fractal-like maze, representing the cosmos as borderless and infinite. The work challenges the Western gaze, suggesting a universe beyond fixed perspectives. Hand-dyed wool yarn in earthy cochineal and pine needles roots the piece in natural, grounding materials.
